Introduction

Islander
Database of Genomic Islands

Prokaryotic chromosomes often contain islands (prophages, pathogenicity islands, etc.) that were delivered by site-specific integrases. Most often the integration sites are in genes for tRNAs or other small RNAs. Focusing on integrase phylogeny and site usage should help us understand how new site-specificity evolves, an important problem in genome evolution.

To view individual islands, select an island from the 'Islands' scrollbar above. To view information about the genes within which islands have inserted, select from the list of 'Integration Sites'. To view information about bacterial or archaeal hosts and the islands they contain, choose from either the 'Hosts (A-Z)' scrollbar (ordered alphabetically) the 'Hosts (Phyla)' scrollbar (ordered by evolutionary similarity).
